“In 2011, our Alma plant in Saguenay Lac-St-Jean was on lock-out for six months following a long and difficult negociation process. Our plant employs approximately 200 professionnals and 800 unionized employees. Our annual aluminum production is arount 460KT and the plant’s recent technology gives it an importante place within Rio Tinto Alcan’s portfolio.
In an atmosphere of difficult labour relations and facing a post-conflict return to work, we were facing several crises. The plant’s management team therefore called on Relais Expert-Conseil’s team for assistance. Their mandate consisted of supporting the management team in developing a return-to-work strategy based on values of respect and strict management. They trained every manager on the appropriate range of skills and desireable behaviours that were needed in a situation such as ours. They coached managers on an individual basis many and offered counselling.
On site for the duration of the return-to-work process, their interventions greatly contibuted to the successful restart of our plant by integrating values associated with respect and rigourous management throughout the entire plant. “On May 4, 2012, the unionized employees working for MAPEI Laval went on strike. After a 19-month-long conflict during which strikers committed intimidation and other unfortunate acts , the return to work was seen as a significant hurdle to overcome. Trepidation and worry were top of mind.
We called on Luc Chabot from Relais Expert-Conseil to guide us and mostly to reassure us. After meeting with the management team and several supervisors, Luc was able to take stock of the atmosphere that prevailed prior to the conflict and understand the worries and challenges that we were facing.
Luc developed toolboxes and held several training sessions in order to prepare our managers who were going to be « front and center » after the conflict. He even made himself available on the Sunday morning on the eve of the return to work in order to ensure all the concepts learned were fresh in our minds.
The result: The return to work went smoothly, and the atmosphere was completely calm, civil and respectful. We knew what to say and what not to say as well as how to proceed. We were confident because we were well prepared and well organized. We had guidelines that everyone followed, and even today, three months after the fact, the work climate remains positive.
